About

LibriVox is a hope, an experiment, and a question: can the net harness a bunch of volunteers to help bring books in the public domain to life through podcasting?

LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain, and then we release the audio files back onto the net. We are a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project.

Other resources for listeners

(In another language: Français: Comment devenir benevole)

LibriVox volunteers narrate, proof listen, and upload chapters of books and other textual works in the public domain. These projects are then made available on the Internet for everyone to enjoy, for free.

There are many, many things you can do to help, so please feel free to jump into the Forum and ask what you can do to help!

Where to Start

Most of what you need to know about LibriVox can be found on the LibriVox Forum and the FAQ. LibriVox volunteers are helpful and friendly, and if you post a question anywhere on the forum you are likely to get an answer from someone, somewhere within an hour or so. So don't be shy! Many of our volunteers have never recorded anything before LibriVox.

Types of Projects

We have three main types of projects:

  • Collaborative projects: Many volunteers contribute by reading individual chapters of a longer text.
We recommend contributing to collaborative projects before venturing out to solo projects.
  • Dramatic Readings and Plays: contributors voice the individual characters. When complete, the editor compiles them into a single recording
  • Solo projects: One experienced volunteer contributes all chapters of the project.

Proof Listener (PL)

Not all volunteers read for LibriVox. If you would prefer not to lend your voice to LibriVox, you could lend us your ears. Proof listeners catch mistakes we may have missed during the initial recording and editing process.

Reader (Narrator)

Readers record themselves reading a section of a book, edit the recording, and upload it to the LibriVox Management Tool.

For an outline of the Librivox audiobook production process, please see The LibriVox recording process.

One Minute Test

We require new readers to submit a sample recording so that we can make sure that your set up works and that you understand how to export files meeting our technical standards. We do not want you to waste previous hours reading whole chapters only to discover that your recording is unusable due to a preventable technical glitch.

Book Coordinator (BC)

Simpsons Hit And Run Level 1 Wasps List

A book coordinator (commonly abbreviated BC in the forum) is a volunteer who manages all the other volunteers who will record chapters for a LibriVox recording.

Metadata Coordinator (MC)

Metadata coordinators (MCs), help and advise Book Coordinators, and take over the files with the completed recordings (soloists are also Book Coordinators in this sense, as they prepare their own files for the Meta coordinators). The files are then prepared and uploaded to the LibriVox catalogue, in a lengthy and cumbersome process.

This level is completed in the Simpsons' neighbourhood by Homer.

Missions

Introduction. After speaking to Marge, drive to the Kwik-E-Mart to collect cola and ice-cream, before driving home. There are no time limitations to this task; it is a simple exercise allowing you to explore the map.

Race. Here, you must race principal Skinner to the school to hand Lisa her science project. Skinner's car is slow, but so is Homer's! You must use shortcuts for this mission, possibly including the Krusty glass just past the Simpsons' house, the fire truck ladder outside the Kwik-E-Mart, the car park close to the church, and behind the Krusty Burger near the school. After racing there, get out of your car, go inside, and talk to Lisa.

Collect. You must drive around the town collecting objects belonging to Flanders. There is a time limit, but if you drive carefully, you will finish with plenty of time.

Destroy. After speaking to Lennie outside the power plant, you must purchase the Plow King from Barney, who is outside the petrol station at the end of the bridge. You are free to acquire another vehicle, but I'd recommend you stick with the Plow King for this mission. The objective is to find Smithers' car and then destory it, by ramming your own vehicle into it, before he can drive to Mr Burns' mansion. The Plow King is slow and handles poorly, but Smithers' car accelerates poorly, so you should not find the mission too difficult. After his car has exploded, head for your office at the power plant to complete the mission.

Foot. Here, you must destroy (by kicking) every power coupling in the power plant, so that the CCTV is cut out, and Homer can have a kip. The task, at first, seems challenging, as you must negotiate with all the lifts and trapdoors in the building, but if you take care, and make each jump count, you will have plenty of time to spare. After smashing the last coupling, head back to Homer's office.

Follow. After watching a news report about the wasp cameras, you must discover who is operating them. Follow the black surveillance van from the Simpsons' house to Mr Burns' mansion. The van is slow, so you can take Homer's pink Sedan.

Smash and Grab. Marge is outraged by a violent video game which is about to go on sale in Springfield. You must chase the delivery truck and ram it, causing the product to fall out. Quickly, you collect this package, and try again. Here, there are ten items for you to collect. The mission is conducted using Marge's Canyonero, which is more than adequate in terms of speed, handling and durability.

Race. The second of this level's race missions, again, against Smithers. This time, you will find him more of a challenge. Your advantage in the previous race depended heavily upon his car's poor acceleration, but here, as you will not frequently hitting his car, it will not be much of an issue. You will need to take every available shortcut as well as a great deal of care. After reaching Burn's mansion, get out of the car and confront him. Congratulations, you may now advance to the second level!

Collect. In this secret mission, you must help Cletus with the 'tomacco' harvest. Firstly, you drive around collecting cardboard tubes. When all five have been picked up, head to the tomacco field. When you get there, there will be approx fifteen plants to pick up. After completing these, head back to Cletus' house. Your reward for completing this mission is his pickup truck.
